Method

Step 1: Prepare the Oven

Preheat the oven to 180°C (160°C fan).
Lightly grease a medium baking dish.

Step 2: Make the Apple Filling

Place the sliced apples into a large mixing bowl.
Add the brown sugar.
Add the cinnamon.
Add the vanilla extract.
Sprinkle over the cornflour.
Pour in the water.
Mix everything together until the apples are evenly coated.
Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish.
Dot the butter over the top of the apples.

Step 3: Make the Crumble Topping

Place the flour into a mixing bowl.
Add the cold diced butter.
Rub the butter into the flour using your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs.
Add the brown sugar.
Add the rolled oats.
Add the cinnamon.
Add the pinch of salt.
Stir until well combined.

Step 4: Assemble

Sprinkle the crumble mixture evenly over the apples.
Do not press the topping down; keep it light and loose.

Step 5: Bake

Place the dish in the preheated oven.
Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling around the edges.

Step 6: Serve

Remove from the oven and allow to stand for 5-10 minutes.
Serve warm on its own or with:
Custard
Vanilla ice cream
Double cream

Tip: For extra texture, add 30g chopped walnuts or pecans to the crumble topping before baking.
